Theme of Isolation in William Faulkners A Rose for Emily - Free Essay Example
Human interaction is an absolute necessity for the well being of a human. Despite the damage that can be done when one is hurt by another, the lack of connection is deadly. A gruesome tale that follows miss Emily Grierson in A rose for Emily by William Faulkner where the author utilizes several tools to dissect how extreme isolation and abandonment may lead a person to such horrendous crimes such as necrophilia. In doing so, death and a resistance to modern ideas became another normality in the story which lead to the death of a womans humanity. All proof of how essential affection is the happiness of a person over all. The damage caused to a person may be observed in the publics highly judgmental, gossipy, and sometimes hypocritically attitude about her and the inability of a person to build any relationships due to the isolation. Emily Grierson is subject to the scrutiny of her whole town in several points of her life. From the very beginning at her funeral the towns people gave way to several aspects of their home which may explain their society. The first section of the story disseminates that she is part of their oncemost select street and now, her once high class house had become an eyesore among eyesores. This rift that Emilys family had with the townspeople led to their belief that she was an obligation to the town. Like her house and its unwillingness to be updated Emily soaks in her stubbornness by refusing to pay her taxes. Demonstrating the lack of respect of authority for the new leaders of the town. She treated them with a cold and dry attitude that demanded respect and patience. Emily never cared for the new authorities of the town and even indicated her alienation and isolation when she for the claims confirmation of a person that passed away almost ten years beforehand. The second section divulges into her tense relationship with the town. The town didnt dare confront her about the taxes nor the about the odor coming from her house.A smell that serves as a foreshadow that there is something rotting away in her house, so much so the they decided to secretly spread lime all around her property. And yet, despite all the indications, all the scrutinization, and observations they make of Miss Emily they ironically fail to realise that she is deeply disturbed, criminally insane, and neglect the discovery of the murder until 40 years after.Once again proving that the drift she had with the town remained as deep and wide as before the death of her father. Despite their efforts to get close to her after the death of her father, her cold attitude and rejection of the tow ns pitty did nothing to better her situation. Only sunk her even deeper into her loneliness, desperation, and madness. Her father became the trauma that set the foundation to her disturbed mind. The fact that her father was described as this looming figure that scared away any suitors explained why after he died she had kept his body. Her instability was evident when the only reason she let them take her fathers body away was due to the fact that they knew he died. Her obsession with death showed how powerless, lonely, and angry she felt towards her father. She is a psychopath driven by her extreme desperation for revenge against her father and her bitterness towards the outside world. Indicating that this is what she wanted until an outsider was let into Emilys world. This short lived happiness was just that. Short lived. Soon their relationship crumbled. Her incapacity to hold an actual relationship with someone is very clear and amplifies her loneliness and the effects of her abandonment. He abandoned her, setting off a trigger in her disturbed soul. When Homer her dashing beau that was often see n with emily around the town after he came to the town and was the center of attention, altered her reality it was as dangerous. This isnt exaggerated when her behavior is further analyzed. He gave her a dose of normal human interaction. Because of her past, she was deprived of this so when he took away, that she sunk into her desperation she decided to keep his company all to herself. Killing him was the only way she understood how to keep that happiness forever. Therefore , the lack of love in her life set the foundation of her instability. Emilys home is a mirrored image of herself with a bond that ages with her. From her beauty and prestige the house that stood proudly in the most select street as did Emilys beauty. Her purity with the years morphed into a smell of decay. In the same way Emily, once young and full of despair, has been driven into madness through the rotting of the old ways and the birth of a modern era. At the same time, her aging in unison with the house and the servant become part of her distorted view on what is love.A monster was being hidden in a rotting house. And that monster was Emily herself. She constitutes the stubbornness and refusal to change. Insisting in the old ways, in the old agreements, in an old house is the very description of her unawareness of the outside world. This type of difficult lifestyle is driven by the miserable people that know no different than their reality. Why would she alter her views when all she has seen is a town controlled by her oppressing father? This is cr ucial proof that people would rather wallow in their misery than to change. With a father like hers and a lack of a mother figure there is no chance she is able to be a functional adult. Despite there being no rose manifested in the story, the title introduced it as the idea of love. A rose that is dried up and conserved in the pages of an old book she is, in the same manner conserving Homers body in his wedding clothes inside the closed off room of the house. As a young girl, suitors lined up and yet she never was allowed the chance to accept the rose of love. This deep despair that she felt when she realized that there is no happy ending , which caused her to drown in madness. The key factor or lack of love is the effects of human warmth that she so desperately needed. The caliber of her taste in the eye of the town is high, therefore Homer wasnt good enough for her. Emily doesnt care about that; she lets herself be seen with him. She actually stepped out of the house to allow everyone to determine the nature of their relationship. Her father was no longer around to say anything about it. She for that short amount of time was able to free herself from her fathers oppression and feel what a normal person feels. This is detrimental to her ability to function as a normal person. Family should be a good support system when everything is going wrong, but for Emily, even that wasnt an option. Her two cousins from Alabama visit her and stay with Miss Emily to assure that her behavior doesnt violate their southern societys strict code of propriety while she and Homer are romantically involved with one another. They didnt come around when her father died and were nowhere to be found as she grew up and yet the only thing they cared about was appearances. Fam ily is supposed to provide support when at home things arent right. Yet, here they were lacking familial love towards Miss Emily. This proves that they possess similar attitudes as her father despite that they allowed this romance. She was indifferent to this, but the truth is that if she now experienced what true affection was, then she would have recognised her family had none of that for her. This is truly saddening and her familys departure is different than all of the others because she might even have been relieved that they left. Her family saw that she had no one and yet decided to leave anyways, this must have been nothing to her since all of the the other abandonments had dangers aftermath. For instance her fathers death lead to her isolation and unconventional behavior. The abandonment of Homer lead to his murder, but she was seemingly passive to her family desertion. So her issues are due to her fathers strict rule over her life. A monster isnt born, its created. In this disturbing short story A Rose for Emily is the proof that in order for a person to have a healthy morality they must have some sort of connection anything outside of a toxic home. Miss Emily isnt a functional human because she lived in forced isolation all of her life. Inside of her house she lived in extreme despair and loneliness, slowly rotting away without any sort of human connection. The lack of affection became deadly to her and whomever attempted to get close to her. From her authoritarian father, her dashing lover, and finally her sanity all rotted away in her home. Extreme isolation and abandonment may lead a person to such horrendous crimes such as necrophilia due to the fact that going without human contact for too long may literally break a heart.

What Are the Bubbles in Boiling Water
Bubbles form when you boil water. Have you ever wondered whats inside them? Do bubbles form in other boiling liquids? Heres a look at the chemical composition of the bubbles, whether boiling water bubbles are different from those formed in other liquids, and how to boil water without forming any bubbles at all. Fast Facts: Boiling Water Bubbles Initially, the bubbles in boiling water are air bubbles.Bubbles in water brought to a rolling boil consist of water vapor. If you reboil water, bubbles may not form. This can lead to explosive boiling!Bubbles form in other liquids, too. The first bubbles consist of air, followed by the vapor phase of the solvent. Inside Boiling Water Bubbles When you first start to boil water, the bubbles that you see are basically air bubbles. Technically, these are bubbles formed from the dissolved gases that come out of the solution, so if the water is in a different atmosphere, the bubbles would consist of those gases. Under normal conditions, the first bubbles are mostly nitrogen with oxygen and a bit of argon and carbon dioxide. As you continue heating the water, the molecules gain enough energy to transition from the liquid phase to the gaseous phase. These bubbles are water vapor. When you see water at a rolling boil, the bubbles are entirely water vapor. Water vapor bubbles start to form on nucleation sites, which are often tiny air bubbles, so as water starts to boil, the bubbles consist of a mixture of air and water vapor. Both air bubbles and water vapor bubbles expand as they rise because there is less pressure pushing on them. You can see this effect more clearly if you blow bubbles underwater in a swimming pool. The bubbles are much larger by the time they reach the surface. The water vapor bubbles start out larger as the temperature gets higher because more liquid is being converted to gas. It almost appears as though the bubbles come from the heat source. While air bubbles rise and expand, sometimes vapor bubbles shrink and disappear as the water changes from the gas state back into liquid form. The two locations where you can see bubbles shrink is at the bottom of a pan just before the water boils and at the top surface. At the top surface, a bubble can either break and release the vapor into the air, or, if the temperature is low enough, the bubble can shrink. The temperature at the surface of boiling water may be cooler than the lower liquid because of the energy that is absorbed by water molecules when they change phases. If you allow the boiled water to cool and immediately reboil it, you wont see dissolved air bubbles form because the water hasnt had time to dissolve gas. This can present a safety risk because the air bubbles disrupt the surface of the water enough to prevent it from explosively boiling (superheating). You can observe this with microwaved water. If you boil the water long enough for the gases to escape, let the water cool, and then immediately reboil it, the surface tension of the water can prevent the liquid from boiling even though its temperature is high enough. Then, bumping the container can lead to sudden, violent boiling! One common misconception people have is believing that bubbles are made of hydrogen and oxygen. When water boils, it changes phase, but the chemical bonds between the hydrogen and oxygen atoms dont break. The only oxygen in some bubbles comes from dissolved air. There isnt any hydrogen gas. Composition of Bubbles in Other Boiling Liquids If you boil other liquids besides water, the same effect occurs. The initial bubbles will consist of any dissolved gases. As the temperature gets closer to the boiling point of the liquid, the bubbles will be the vapor phase of the substance. Boiling Without Bubbles While you can boil water without air bubbles simply by reboiling it, you cant reach the boiling point without getting vapor bubbles. This is true of other liquids, including molten metals. Scientists have discovered a method of preventing bubble formation. The method is based on the Leidenfrost effect, which can be seen by sprinkling droplets of water on a hot pan. If the surface of theà water is coated with a highly hydrophobic (water-repellent) material, a vapor cushion forms that prevents bubbling or explosive boiling. The technique doesnt have much application in the kitchen, but it can be applied to other materials, potentially reducing surface drag or control metal heating and cooling processes.

Supply Chain Risk Management Analysis Essay - 3068 Words
SUPPLY CHAIN RISK MANAGEMENT Intro: It is too difficult to give one and distinctive definition of Supply Chain Risk management (SCRM). Indeed, Sodhi, Son, and Tang (2012) begins their findings with the similar fact that ââ¬Ëthere is no clear consensus on the definition of SCRM (because some restrict the scope of SCRM to rare but large impact events while other authors believe that SCRM is about demand-supply uncertainties. 1/3rd of their analysis did not just show that respondents took a probabilistic approach and define SCRM as dealing with probabilities related to supply demand matching but also the same number took an operations view in suggesting that SCRM deals exclusively with risks originating from SC performance. This paper categorizes definitions, risks related to SCRM and some tools on different basis. Mrs. Mulligan English 10 Honors 20 March 2013 Competitive Gaming Competitive gaming, also known as e-sports, is becoming a worldwide phenomenon. With huge events and tournaments that are watched by millions of passionate fans, many people are beginning to question whether playing video games can be considered a real sport. Even though e-sports may not be as physically demanding as traditional sports like football and basketball, the structure, strong fan base and the requirements to seriously contend in the competitive gaming scene legitimize it as a ââ¬Å"realâ⬠sport. It is important to gain an understanding of the complete picture of e-sports before classifying it as a real sport. Competitive gamingââ¬â¢s origins can be traced all the way back to the ââ¬Å"golden age of gamingâ⬠in the 1980s, where players battled for the highest scores in games like ââ¬Å"Pac-manâ⬠and ââ¬Å"Donkey Kongâ⬠in local arcades around the world (ââ¬Å"History of Competitive Gamingâ⬠). This is the earliest piece of evidence that displays how video games produced an environment where competitiveness and recreation went hand-in-hand. We will write a custom essay sample on Esports or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page In more recent years the popularity of video games has rapidly increased. For instance, a study in 2008 revealed that nearly 60 percent of the United States population played video games online; a statistic that continues to grow as technology and gaming become more and more accepted by society (Antonucci). With video games being played on a much larger scale due to bolstered availability, the competitive atmosphere that originated in the 80s evolved into what today is called e-sports. In modern times it has often been debated whether gaming is just another hobby, or if it can be considered as a viable sport and career path. E-sports have a massive and passionate fan base that spans the entire globe. For example, the Street Fighter and Counter Strike series are played by a plethora of people in ââ¬Å"Japan, America, and Europeâ⬠(Totilo). League of Legends, which is a multiplayer online battle arena [MOBA] title made by Riot Games, is working to put e-Sports on the same level as traditional sports. Last October, Riot held the League of Legends Season 2 World Championships, a tournament that brought the worldââ¬â¢s best teams together for a week of intense matches.$1 million went to the overall champion, while a total of $5 million was spread out over the course of Season 2. Apart from the unprecedented cash prizes, the League of Legends tournament was able to bring in over 8 million ââ¬Å"unique viewersâ⬠online, viewership that is greater than the National Hockey Leagueââ¬â¢s (Heaven and Robinson). In South Korea individual e-sports events for the popular real-time strategy game StarCr aft 2 bring in over 100,000 live attendants to go alongside huge numbers of online spectators (Robinson). On top of this, competitive gamingââ¬â¢s popularity is continuing to grow through 2013. David Ting, founder of Imagine Game Networkââ¬â¢s professional gaming league, states that online traffic for the companyââ¬â¢s tournaments is ââ¬Å"doubling every six monthsâ⬠(qtd. in Heaven). Who wouldââ¬â¢ve thought that playing video games would turn into such a loved spectator sport? Apart from the large following of people, the competitive gaming scene shares many of the same structural characteristics as traditional sports like football and baseball, as is shown by the game League of Legends. Like conventional games, League of Legends features a regular season where prominent and upcoming teams verse each other to climb the standings in their divisions. When the regular season ends, the top teams from each division go into intense playoff series. The winners from the playoffs then compete in the World Championship tournaments mentioned earlier, in order to crown the worldââ¬â¢s best team. League of Legends also includes an All-Star game where elite players from any team and region come together to put on a spectacular show for the fans. Just as the NFL provides fans with high quality productions like Monday Night Football, Riot Games has invested a large amount of money into hiring crews and broadcasters that can bring that type of experience to e-sports (Robinson). Through sponsorship deals and season winnings, pro gamers usually make upwards of $100,000 per year, constituting gaming as a worthy occupation (Heaven). Other games also have this type of structure, but League of Legends is the first to put itself on a widespread global scale. With this type of structure, the only real question for this debate is if competitive gaming requires enough physical activity to be considered a sport. Many people that are against the idea of competitive gaming as a sport argue that it doesnââ¬â¢t require enough physical activity. The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines physical as ââ¬Å"relating to the bodyâ⬠(ââ¬Å"Physicalâ⬠). Since competitive gaming requires a person to have amazing hand-eye coordination and great dexterity with a keyboard or controller, there is surely a physical component when it comes to gaming (Totilo). In between the major competitions, pro gaming teams are locked in intense practice sessions, play scrimmages against other teams, and watch plenty of film to develop new strategies for the battlefield (Robinson). Professional gamers have to be physically and mentally capable to perform under the stressful conditions of the major events. In classifying competitive gaming as a sport, one can also look at other activities that are already considered a ââ¬Å"realâ⬠sport by the International Olympic Committee [IOC]. For instance, the IOC decided that Chess met its prerequisites, and was officially recognized as a sport in the 1990s (Totilo). Chess, which is only a mind game, goes to show how the more complex e-sports scene should be a sport. With a great structure, large fan base, and high skill requirements, competitive gaming is a sport in every way. The only thing holding the e-sports scene back is societyââ¬â¢s outdated mindset of what constitutes a sport. Because people have become accustomed to the idea that a sport has to have a ball and the players have to be athletic, they have failed to appreciate the physical, mental and ââ¬Å"technical excellenceâ⬠displayed by pro gamers (Totilo). Big corporations like ESPN and the IOC have to wake up and start promoting competitive gaming as a real sport. Someday, pro gamers around the world will be held in the same respect as a LeBron James or Aaron Rodgers. Works Cited Antonucci, Mike.

Metamorphosis Essays - Developmental Biology, Metamorphosis
Metamorphosis Metamorphosis: In biology, striking change of form or structure in an individual after hatching or birth. Hormones called molting and juvenile hormones, which are not species specific, apparently regulate the changes. These physical changes as well as those involving growth and differentiation are accompanied by alterations of the organism's physiology, biochemistry, and behavior. From animal development. Metamorphosis, the transformation of the larva into an adult, is a more or less complicated process depending on the degree of difference between the two forms. The transformation may be gradual, extend over a long period, and involve a number of intermediate stages; alternatively, the transformation may be achieved in one step. In the latter case, especially if the difference between the larva and adult is great, large parts of the body of the larva, including all the specifically larval organs, disintegrate (necrobiotic metamorphosis). Critical mass: ?n nuclear physics, the minimum amount of a given fissile material necessary to achieve a self-sustaining fission chain reaction under stated conditions. Its size depends on several factors, including the kind of fissile material used, its concentration and purity, and the composition and geometry of the surrounding reaction system. History & Philosophy. The study either of the historical process and its development or of the methods used by historians to understand their material. The term history may be employed in two quite different senses: it may mean (1) the events and actions that together make up the human past, or (2) the accounts given of that past and the modes of investigation whereby they are arrived at or constructed.

Sex Hormones In Women essays
Sex Hormones In Women essays The main issue I m going to discuss is Premenstrual Syndrome, or PMS. It is a constellation of symptoms that directly precedes menstruation. These symptoms vary from woman to woman. PMS is a hormonal disorder characterized by a regularly recurring group of symptoms. These symptoms may occur from two to fourteen days before a womans menstrual period, usually disappearing after the period begins and directly followed by a symptom-free time each month. PMS symptoms can be both emotional and physical, affecting almost every system of the body. Some symptoms of other medical conditions can resemble PMS. Some of these conditions include allergies, depression, diabetes, dysmenorrhea, endometriosis, fibrocystic breast disease, and thyroid problems. To help determine whether you suffer from PMS, use symptom charting, as PMS symptoms usually come and go each month and at the same time. PMS symptoms occur in the second half of the menstrual cycle. During this time, production of the hormone Progesterone should increase and peak. About seven days before the menstrual period, Estrogen and Progesterone levels decrease dramatically, causing menstruation to occur. PMS symptoms occur as a result of low levels of progesterone, excessive levels of estrogen and/or fluctuations in both levels. Many women find that PMS worsens with age. This also suggests a correlation with hormone levels being out of balance. There are many treatments for PMS. Some of these treatments are exersize, having a balanced diet, the best way to have a balance diet and to reduce PMS is to have 6 small meals everyday instead of three large meals. Both of these techniques can help women reduce the symptoms of PMS. Recent studies are indicating that girls are going through puberty at earlier ages. The question that arises on many peoples minds is: Whats causing it? and what are the pychological effects? Melissa Carter could not believe ...

Two methods of determining ABO and Rh groups Essay
Two methods of determining ABO and Rh groups - Essay Example The paper tells that because of Rh and ABO, it is important to be able to chemically identify the different blood types. In the ABO blood group system there are two types of marker that are present on the blood cells. These are type A and type B. If an individual has neither of these markers then they are considered to be type O. Individuals can be of blood type A, B, O or AB, as they inherit one type of marker from each parent. The human body does not produce antibodies for the markers that it contains, but does so for the ones that are not present. This is because the immune system sees the foreign marker as an invader and consequently defends itself against it. Thus, a person with type AB blood does not have antibodies against either A or B markers, and can consequently receive blood from any blood type. However, they also cannot give to any other blood type. In contrast, someone with type O blood can donate blood to any blood type as no antibodies will be raised, and but can rece ive blood only from other type O donors. Another factor that is present in the blood of humans is known as the Rh or rhesus system. This was first discovered through immunization of rabbits with blood that had been obtained from rhesus monkeys. It was found that the antibodies in the rabbit caused the blood to cogulate. Although the Rh system contains around 50 different antigens, five of which are considered to be the most important (D, C, c, E and e), and of these the D antigen is the most relevant. It is often thought to be the most polymorphic blood group system in humans. ... Secondly, the study used antibody screening on two plasma samples to determine the presence of antibodies. Materials and Methods Tube Grouping: Rh (D) and ABO antigens in unknown samples Four agglutinin reagents were to used in this experiment, Anti-A, Anti-B, Anti-A,B and Anti-D Alpha. These reagents react directly with the antigens present in red blood by making the cells clump together. Thus, they could be used to determine the blood type of each of the four patients. Sixteen clean test tubes were taken and labelled with patient name (Patient 1, 2, 3 or 4) and one of the four reagents so that for each patient there was a total of four tubes, each labelled with the name of a different reagent. Two drops of the labelled reagent were added to each tube. For each of the four patients, the cell sample was inverted several times to ensure the cells were thoroughly mixed, and then one drop of cells was placed in each of four test tubes for that patient. The cells were incubated at room t emperature for 15 minutes and then examined for agglutination. Ortho ABD and Reverse Cassettes: Rh (D) and ABO antigens in unknown samples For this section of the experiment, the same four patient samples were used. The samples were inverted to mix them and then they were loaded into the cassettes. One cassette was used for each patient and these were labelled. Each cassette had four marked wells, A, B, D and control. In each well 10 à µl of the respective patient sample was placed. The cassettes were then placed in the Ortho Centrifuge and spun for five minutes, and then the results read. Antibody Screening An Ortho Poly AHG cassette was provided. This had six wells that contained Poly Specific Anti ââ¬â Human Globulin. Three antibody-screening cells
